After some intense negotiations over the past few days, Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association were unable to come to a deal to avoid a delayed 2022 regular season, therefore this afternoon Commissioner Manfred announced that Major League Baseball will be canceling the first and second series of 2022 and the lockout will continue.
Major League Baseball presented its “best and final” offer to the Players association around 3:50 pm EST before their imposed 5:00 pm EST deadline which the players union rejected late Tuesday afternoon.
Representatives for players and owners met for nine days straight, including a marathon session into the night on Monday and into Tuesday that lasted over 16 hours, but the appearance of momentum was just left to tweets from reporters that were covering the session from Flordia. According to reports, MLB’s proposal today would have increased the minimum salary to $700,000 this year, up from $570,500 in 2021. That is the largest single-year increase in MLB history.
Now it’s just a matter of how many games will be canceled, and when the two sides might resume negotiations. Unless there’s a deal on a new CBA within the next week, Major League Baseball will be forced to cancel more regular-season games.
