Leading the Morning Briefing: Nationals lose series finale to the New York Mets despite a five run ninth inning. Following a must-needed win on Tuesday that spoiled Jacob deGrom’s season debut, the Nats fell, 9-5, on Wednesday at Nationals Park, but not before putting together a five-run ninth-inning rally.

Up next…

The Nationals head north to face the Philadelphia Phillies for a weekend series. The Nationals will welcome two more new faces when they take on the Phillies in a four-game weekend series at Citizens Bank Park.

Of the six players acquired from the Padres, veteran first baseman/designated hitter Luke Voit and rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore are expected to join the Nats in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Welcoming new faces and getting assignments.

With the influx of new talent to the Washington Nationals in the aftermath of the Soto/Bell trade, There has been a lot of talk about where the new prospects will be heading. Yesterday morning, on the Junkies Radio Show on 106.7, the fan, GM Mike Rizzo, outlined where he thinks some new players will be heading. Click here to see the complete list.

While nothing has been made official regarding the new prospects, we know that 1B/DH Luke Voit and rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore are expected to join the Nats in Philadelphia on Thursday.

In his post-game press conference, Martinez mentioned that he had already spoken with Voit and said, “I told him that we’re getting young here, and I expect him to come here and give good effort but help the younger players as well… He’s been in the league for quite some time. We could use [his] bat in our lineup. He can hit.

Martinez continued: “I’m looking forward to getting to know him, getting him in the lineup as soon as he comes here.”

After Wednesday’s defeat to the New York Mets, the Nationals requested the unconditional release of veteran infielder Alcides Escobar to make room for Luke Voit, who will join the Nationals.
