WEST PALM BEACH, FL - The Washington Nationals defeated their division rivals, the Mets, by a score of 4-1 on the backs of timely middle-innings runs and excellent pitching. Second-year lefty Mitchell Parker took the mound for the Nationals, while big names like CJ Abrams, Dylan Crews, and James Wood got the night off, and names that are unlikely to make the roster got some good reps in.

The pitching staff did great tonight, a much-welcome change from the past week where big innings seemed to bite the squad. Parker threw 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits and the only earned run of the game. He started the night off by retiring the side on just four pitches, and he avoided trouble until some bad luck in the third inning, which is when the lone run scored. Parker walked four hitters but was mostly able to limit the damage. Jose A. Ferrer relieved him and allowed just one hit, Colin Poche struck out the side, and Eduardo Salazar pitched 2.0 scoreless to wrap the game up and get the win. While the team still made three errors in the field, a troubling trend throughout the spring, the staff did not let it turn into unearned runs like they had been of late.

The lineup was able to muster seven hits and four runs. Nobody got more than a single hit, and Jose Tena was the only one with multiple RBIs, which he got when he knocked in two runs with a double in the sixth. Every run tonight came off of an extra-base hit, as Paul DeJong doubled in the fourth and Daylen Lile tripled in the fifth. That was it for the scoring as the lineup stayed quiet as substitutions started to be made, and the team finished the game with 30 at-bats, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Andres Chaparro was still notably absent after leaving batting practice on Friday with an oblique injury. Unfortunately, the latest reports are that he will not be ready for Opening Day. Luckily, he avoided a serious injury.

“That could be two to four weeks. We’ll see how fast he heals, but he’s going to be out for a little bit,” Dave Martinez said. He’s done really well this camp. He’s really hit the ball hard. But you know what, we’ve got a long year. I told him: ‘Get yourself ready, get yourself healthy. Be ready. As the season goes on, things happen.’ If he’s starting to swing the bat, he’s going to help us.”

Up next:

The Nationals will host the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow at 1:05 as Michael Soroka faces off against Connor Seabold. Both guys have had a great spring, and it will be a great matchup to see. While it will only be broadcast on 106.7 The Fan, it will be a great game to follow. The team will then face a former friend in Erick Fedde and his new team, the Cardinals, on Monday.
