West Palm Beach, FL - Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood is suffering from quad tendonitis in his left leg, manager Dave Martinez announced today during the team's first official full-team workout. While Wood could potentially play designated hitter to get at-bats while recovering, Martinez's priority is ensuring he's fully healthy for Opening Day.
"As soon as we deem he's ready to go out in the outfield, he'll be in the outfield," Martinez said. "They're doing stuff to strengthen that area. And, so, it'll be fine here soon.”
He added that the injury doesn't affect Wood's hitting. "Yeah, the good news is it doesn't bother him when he hits," Martinez confirmed. "Yeah, he's, I mean, like I said, I'm being more cautious than anything. It's early, so we want to ensure he'll be ready for Opening Day. It's a quad. It's tendonitis, quad tendonitis. He says. He feels fine; He could run; he said now and then, I just feel like a little, and I said, well, great, I don't want you to feel any of it."
Quad tendonitis sidelines Nationals' James Wood, but the young outfielder remains focused on the bigger picture. “Obviously, I really want to be out there, and it sucks,” the 22-year-old said. “It’s kind of boring just watching. I’d rather be doing the stuff. But I understand the pace they want to go and how they want to go about it. I trust them. The main thing is just being ready for the season.”
