WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Right-handed pitcher Jarlin Susana is making waves in the Washington Nationals organization, and manager Dave Martinez is clearly impressed with the young pitcher's development. While his raw talent has always been evident, it's Susana's increasing maturity that's truly capturing attention. "His maturity," Martinez emphasized when discussing Susana's progress. "He's definitely getting a little bit more mature. He's starting to understand what he needs to do, what we're looking for, but he's handling himself well in a lot of different situations in the game, you know, where things don't get unraveled for him. So it's been fun to watch him and watch his growth."
Susana's journey began in 2022 when he signed with the San Diego Padres at the age of 18. The towering 6'6" right-hander, hailing from Villa Isabela, Dominican Republic, quickly became known for his blazing fastball, reaching speeds of 103 mph. He was a key component of the trade that brought Juan Soto to Washington, and he's now showing why the Nationals were so keen to acquire him.
His progress through the minor leagues has been steady. Starting the 2024 season in Fredericksburg, Susana earned a promotion to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, where he finished the year. His final stat line for the season includes a 4-10 record, a 4.34 ERA, and a remarkable 157 strikeouts in 103.2 innings. His 1.31 WHIP also speaks to his ability to limit opposing hitters.
Martinez's comments suggest that Susana's growth extends beyond just his physical skills. He's developing a better understanding of the game and what it takes to succeed at the professional level. "He's starting to understand what he needs to do, what we're looking for," Martinez explained. This suggests a growing awareness of strategy and a willingness to learn and adapt.
