ROCHESTER, NY - As the Rochester Red Wings gear up for their 198th professional season, excitement filled the air at Innovative Field during Media Day on March 27, 2025. The team will hit the road today, traveling 60 miles west along the New York State Thruway to face off against their rivals, the Buffalo Bisons (Blue Jays affiliate), in a three-game opening series.

I had the privilege of attending Media Day, where the press met with Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy, now in his fifth season leading the team, along with promising players Darren Baker, Robert Hassell III, and third baseman Brady House. With a revamped facility boasting state-of-the-art indoor batting cages and an impressive weight room, the optimism among the team was palpable. Below, I’ll dive into the insights shared during an engaging interview with Brady House, a standout talent just one step away from the majors.

When asked about his mindset heading into Spring Training, Brady House emphasized his focus on contributing to the team’s success. “My mindset was to do anything that will help the team win,” he said. “Sometimes I found myself in big situations at bat and in the field and I learned to stay calm and trust the process my coaches have taught me.” This approach reflects a maturity beyond his years, showcasing a player who thrives under pressure by leaning on preparation and composure.

House’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Three years ago, an injury sidelined him, and the frustration was undeniable. “I was frustrated at the time,” he admitted before quickly shifting focus to his recovery. “I’ve been three years of being healthy, so I’m excited to start another season.” His resilience and positive outlook bode well as he enters the 2025 campaign with a clean bill of health.

At this stage in his career, House is tantalizingly close to a call-up to the Washington Nationals, Rochester’s parent club. When asked if this proximity requires patience, he offered a thoughtful response: “In a way, yeah. You never know when your time is going to be. I think what they’re looking for up there is more consistency. Consistency comes with patience!” For House, the key to unlocking that next step lies in delivering steady performances day in and day out—a mindset that could see him donning a Nationals uniform sooner rather than later.

One topic that sparked unanimous praise from LeCroy, Baker, Hassell, and House was the Red Wings’ upgraded facilities. The new indoor batting cages and expansive weight room left a strong impression on House. “They are amazing! They are really nice! Much better than I expected…way, way better!” he exclaimed. Beyond the wow factor, he sees these improvements as a catalyst for team growth. “When you have facilities like we have, it makes the guys want to go there and work out. It will help in building team camaraderie,” he noted. It’s clear that these enhancements aren’t just about aesthetics—they’re poised to elevate the team’s preparation and unity.

Opening Day always carries a unique energy, and House acknowledged its significance, particularly for the fans. “From a weather standpoint, yeah! I try to treat it like any other day. I’m sure it will feel a little different for each of us. I know Opening Day is big for the fans, and that makes it big for us,” he shared. With the season opener set for Buffalo, where early spring weather can be unpredictable, House took a pragmatic approach to preparing for the cold: “I don’t think you can! You have to tell yourself, it’s not that bad.” His lighthearted resilience hints at a player ready to adapt to whatever challenges come his way.

Rochester has recently served as a proving ground for Nationals prospects, and House values the wisdom passed down from those who’ve walked the path before him. “It’s always good talking to people that have gone through the system,” he said. Beyond baseball, he highlighted the importance of off-field bonds: “It’s important to have friends on the team that you can get away from the game and have a good time with each other outside of baseball.” These relationships, he believes, help maintain balance and perspective during the grind of a long season.

Entering his fifth year as Red Wings manager, Matt LeCroy has built a strong rapport with his players, and House couldn’t speak highly enough of him. “He’s amazing! It was great having him around at Spring Training. I talked with him every day. Super excited!” House said, his enthusiasm evident. LeCroy’s steady presence and approachability seem to be key ingredients in fostering a positive team environment as the Red Wings aim for a strong 2025 season.

The Red Wings kick off their season this weekend in Buffalo, with Andrew Alvarez slated to take the mound for Rochester in the opener against Bisons pitcher Eric Lauer. Game time is set for 2:05 PM, marking the start of what promises to be an exciting campaign. Having seen Brady House and his teammates up close at Media Day, I’m eager to watch how their talent, bolstered by top-notch facilities and a tight-knit team spirit, translates to the field. Here’s to a thrilling 198th season for the Rochester Red Wings!
