The Washington Nationals and Rochester Red Wings reached an agreement in 2021 that is now entering its fifth year, with Rochester being Washington’s AAA affiliate. Rochester has had a minor-league baseball team since 1877.
At this time, Rochester, New York, is covered in white snow, but on March 28th, it will open the 2025 season in Buffalo. It’s that time of year with Spring Training starting for the Nationals to do a Spring Preview on the Rochester Red Wings.
I will be doing an in-depth preview of the players listed on the Red Wings’ roster and some of the players listed on the 40-man roster that may start the year in Rochester. This preview will divide the players into five areas: Starting Pitchers, Relief Pitchers, Catchers, Infielders, and Outfielders.

Daison Acosta spent six years in the Mets organization after signing an international contract at 18. Last year, he signed a minor league contract with the Nationals. Acosta had the most successful season in his professional career, pitching the majority of his time with Harrisburg before being promoted to Rochester later in the season. Acosta pitched so well in relief for the Senators and Red Wings that he is a non-roster invitee to Spring Training this year. Acosta throws a fastball primarily in the low to mid-90s that appears faster to a hitter because of its sinking life. His strikeout pitch last year was an excellent mid-80s slider that has great depth.
Daison appeared in 43 games for Harrisburg, posting a 4-3 record and an excellent 2.89 ERA. His control and location of his pitches were good, as he posted 24 walks and 73 strikeouts for a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. On September 12th, Acosta was promoted to the Wings. In the last two weeks of the season, he made four appearances and did not give up any runs. In relief last year, he pitched 30.0 innings against left-handed hitters, and his WHIP was a high 1.50. Meanwhile, against right-handed hitters, he pitched 28.1 innings, and his WHIP was 0.88.
I think Daison Acosta will probably be used as a setup pitcher in innings 6-8 when he would be facing mainly a right-handed batting order, or in extra innings when the "ghost runner" is at second to start the inning and you are starting the inning off with right-handed bats.
2025 Prediction: The first full year in AAA and will probably spend a season in Rochester. It could possibly be a late-season call-up if he's able to duplicate his 2024 success.
