Washington Nationals Drop Evening Bout to New York Mets 2-0

The Washington Nationals lost game two of their weekend series against the New York Mets by a score of 2-0.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - APRIL 26 - The Washington Nationals lost game two of their weekend series against the New York Mets by a score of 2-0. An early home run surrendered by Brad Lord proved to be the difference in a game defined by rain delays and bullpens.

Lord took the mound for Washington, but it was on a weird schedule. After a brief delay pregame and a slightly longer break in the bottom of the first due to rain, the Mets struck in the top of the second inning. Jesse Winker ended an eight-pitch at-bat with a single, setting the stage for Francisco Alvarez, who launched a two-run homer to right field off a slider from Nationals starter Brad Lord, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. Lord pitched four innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs, taking the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season.

That blast would be all the offense New York needed. Starter Clay Holmes delivered five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two without issuing a walk. He was backed by a bullpen that combined for four shutout innings. Danny Young, Reed Garrett, A.J. Minter, Max Kranick, and Edwin Díaz each shut the Nats offense down, with Díaz striking out the side in the ninth to secure his seventh save of the season.

Offensively, the Nationals managed seven hits but couldn't capitalize. Dylan Crews and Luis García Jr. each had two hits, but the team went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

You look at what’s going on, you think we’re going to snap out of it and get a couple of hits. It just didn’t happen today with guys on base. We got some hits, but not any big hits, timely hits.

With the win, the Mets improved to 19-8, setting a franchise record for April victories. The Nationals fell to 12-15. Last year, the Nationals were 11-14 on this date, but with a schedule that was arguably much more friendly than they have faced so far in 2025.

Up next…

The four-game series continues Sunday afternoon, with New York's Tylor Megill (3-2, 1.09 ERA) facing Washington's Mitchell Parker (3-1, 1.39 ERA). Monday’s finale is expected to be Griffin Canning (3-1, 3.12 ERA) against Trevor Williams (1-2, 5.11 ERA). Following this set, the Nats will head up to Philadelphia for a three-game series.
